Scouting Now Scouting with the Stars New Young Spokespeople Team by Susie Mackie Photo: Jennifer Koel hey come from many different cities and towns across Canada. They are Scouts through and through; each with a background of unique Scouting experiences. They are young; they are enthusiastic; they are making history. They are our very first Scouts Canada Modeled after an extremely successful program run by UK Scouting, the Scouts Canada Young Spokespeople Program recruits young Canadian Scouts from diverse backgrounds to act as official media spokespeople. Who better to share our stories than our finest ambassadors: our own youth members! They will be called upon to speak about their experiences in ways that encourage other young people to join Scouting, more adults to volunteer, and for communities or individuals to support all the great things Scouting does. The official program began earlier this year, with a nationwide search, with the to fill only ten slots on the team (the National Youth Network members are also youth spokespeople). They met for the first time at Camp Woodland Trails, north of Toronto, where their outgoing spirits and Scouting stories made them all instant friends. A full weekend of media training ensued: each and every one of these youth impressed us with their personalities, enthusiasm, and YSP Nakita Cheung, second row, fourth from right, struts her stuff on Breakfast Television in August 2010. professional attitude toward their important new duties. Over the next year, they may be called upon at any time to speak to reporters, appear on camera, or speak at Scouting or other community events.
